B.C. Duke Hayward was born on January 14, 1880 in London. He was an American Director of Photography, known for The Birth of Patriotism (1917), Broken Fetters (1916), The Chalice of Sorrow (1916), B.C. Duke Hayward's first movie on record is from 1915. B.C. Duke Hayward died on an unknown date. His last motion picture on file dates from 1918.
Biographical Notes in German: Eigentlich Bernard C. Hayward, Kameramann des amerikanischen Stummfilms, 1880 in London geboren und dort aufgewachsen. Hayward emigrierte später in die USA und arbeitete während zwanzig Jahren als Photograph bei den Hearst Zeitungen, dann auch für die Filmgesellschaften Reliance-Majestic, Lubin und Universal.
Am 29. Oktober 1907 heiratet Hayward M. Evangeline Moran, ein Sohn Bernard jr. wird 1910 geboren. Um 1915 macht er über die Schauspielerin Seena Owen (=Signe Auen) die Bekanntschaft mit ihrer älteren Schwester Lillie Auen. Hayward war zwischenzeitlich geschieden und heiratete Lillie am 8. August 1915. 1918 wurde die gemeinsame Tochter geboren. Die Ehe war anscheinend von kurzer Dauer, denn bald darauf zog Lillie Hayward (1889-1977) zu ihrer nun ebenfalls geschiedenen Schwester Signe.
Bei Universal traf Hayward 1916 den Regisseur Rex Ingram, der ihn bei seinem Film Broken Fetters als Ersatz für den Kameramann Stanley Sinclair engagierte. Hayward drehte in der Folge weitere vier Filme mit Ingram, nach The Flower of Doom brach die Zusammenarbeit ab.
Mit E. Magnus Ingleton drehte Hayward kurz darauf den Film "The Birth of Patriotism", dann tauchte sein Name bis 1918 noch bei vier Filmen des Regisseurs Stuart Paton mit Francelia Billington resp. Carmel Myers auf. Als Paton die Universal verliess, scheint auch der Name Duke Hayward nicht mehr auf - Für den 10. September 1918 findet sich eine Registration card aus Los Angeles für die US Army. Ob er tatsächlich noch eingezogen wurde oder weiteres ist über Hayward nicht bekannt. (lhg 2014)
