Erwähnt wird in einem Artikel von 191x seine Karriere als Schaspieler und Stage Manager seit zwanzig Jahren, was nahe lehen würde, dass Kaufman um 1895 zum ersten Male auftrat. Es finden sich aber auch keine Hinweise auf eine Ausbildung als Schauspieler, so dass man annehmen könnte, Kaufman habe des Handwerk des Schauspielers "von der Pike" gelernt.
Erste konkrete Angaben gibt die Broadway Database )www.ibdb.com), die vier plays aus den Jahren 1905 bis 1909 nennt. Es dauerte dann aber noch weitere fünf Jahre, bis Kaufman zum ersten Male im Zusammenhang mit Film genannt wird: 1914 ist er Schauspieler bei Lubin in dem Ein-Akter.
