Robert Bresson was born on September 25, 1907 in Brémont-Lamothe /Auvergne. "1901 in der Auvergne geboren, wandte sich Bresson zuerst der Malerei zu, ehe er in den 30er Jahren seine Leidenschaft für den Film entdeckte. Nachdem er einige Zeit als Drehbuchautor gearbeitet hatte, realisierte er 1934 seinen ersten eigenen Kurzfilm "Les affaires publiques", der lange Zeit als verschollen galt und erst in den 90er Jahren wieder auftauchte. 1943 drehte Bresson seinen ersten abendfüllenden Spielfilm "Das Hohelied der Liebe", den der Filmemacher selbst als den wahren Beginn seiner Filmarbeit bezeichnete. Mit "Das Geld" schuf er 1983 sein letztes und - was den minimalistischen Stil angeht - zugleich sein wohl intensivstes und anspruchsvollstes Werk. 1999 starb Bresson im Alter von 98 Jahren in Paris, ohne sein letztes großes Projekt verwirklicht haben zu können: Eine filmische Adaption der Genesis, des ersten Kapitels der Bibel."
