Biographical Notes in German: Brasilianischer Filmregisseur, anfänglich Architekt bei Marcel L'Herbier. Schöpfer beachtlicher Stummfilme in Frankreich, dann Mitte der Dreissiger Jahre zu John Grierson an die General Post Office Film Unit nach England. 1949 zurück in seine Heimat Brasilien, wo er im Auftrage der Regierung das Brasilianische Filminstitut aufbaute. 1955 ensteht in Österreich seine Brecht Verfilmung HERR PUNTILA UND SEIN KNECHT MATTI.
"Alberto Cavalcanti (1897-1982) stammt aus Brasilien und war Produzent, Regisseur und Multitalent. Nach einem Architekturstudium in Genf kommt er 1922 nach Paris, wo er als Ausstatter für Marcel L'Herbier, Louis Delluc und Jean Renoir arbeitet. Sein erster Film "Rien que les heures" (1926) ist eines der Hauptwerke der Avantgarde der 20er Jahre. Mit ihm begründet er ein neues Filmgenre, die Stadtsinfonie. Es folgte "En rade" (1928), ein Film über das Leben in einer Hafenstadt und die Sehnsucht nach neuen Horizonten. Sein Geld verdient er mit Literaturadaptionen ("Capitaine Fracasse", "Yvette" nach Maupassant) und - nach Aufkommen des Tonfilms - mit französischen Fassungen amerikanischer Filme. 1933 wird er von Grierson nach England berufen, um für die GPO Film Unit zu arbeiten, die ein Jahrzehnt lang Englands wichtigster Produzent von Dokumentarfilmen war. Mit seinen Theorien über die Kommentarfunktion des Tons übt er erheblichen Einfluss auf die britische Dokumentarfilmschule aus. Cavalcanti ist Sound Designer ("Night Mail"), Regisseur ("Coal Face") und Produzent ("The First Days") und verhilft jungen Regisseuren wie Len Lye und Humphrey Jennings zu erfolgreichen Starts. Nach Griersons Rückzug 1937 ist er bis 1940 Chefproduzent der Unit. Danach produziert er Dokumentarfilme für die Ealing Studios. Als Regisseur macht er Filme wie "Went the Day Well?" (1942) und "They Made Me a Fugitive" (1947). 1950 geht er nach Brasilien zurück, wo er für seine eigene Gesellschaft Regie führt und produziert. Später wendet er sich dem Theater zu, verfilmt in der DDR Brechts "Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti" (1955) und inszeniert ein Stück für Kinder in England. Zuletzt lehrte er Film an der UCLA in Los Angeles." (arte Presse)
