John Gottowt was born on June 9, 1881 in Lemberg, Galizien. He was a German Actor, Director, Author, known for Nosferatu, der Vampyr (1922), Der Bucklige und die Tänzerin (1920), Der Student von Prag (1913), John Gottowt's first movie on record is from 1913. John Gottowt died on August 27, 1942 in Wieliczka. His last motion picture on file dates from 1932.
Biographical Notes in German: Eigentlich Isidor Gesang, Schauspieler und Regisseur des deutschen Theaters und Films, geboren im galizischen Lemberg, Theaterausbildung in Wien, dann 1905 Engagement bei Max Reinhardt am Deutschen Theater in Berlin. Eine seiner ersten Filmrollen hatte John Gottowt als dämonischer Scalpinelli in der 1913er Version des "Student von Prag", er spielte bei Murnau u.a. in "Der Bucklige und die Tänzerin" und "Nosferatu". 1920 übernahm er zusammen mit seinem Schwager Henrik Galeen das Theater an der Kommandantenstrasse in Berlin, 1923 das Kabarett "Die Gondel" zusammen mit Paul Leni.
1933 beendeten die Nazis seine Karriere mit einem Berufsverbot, über Dänemark zog Gottowt nach Krakau, 1942 wurde er in Wieliczka von deutschen Soldaten ermordet. [lhg 2013]
