Alice Guy was born on July 1, 1873 in Paris. She was a French Director, Producer, known for Mireille (1906), The Empress (1917), The Ocean Waif (1916), Alice Guy's first movie on record is from 1898. Alice Guy died on March 24, 1968 in Mahwah, NJ, US. Her last motion picture on file dates from 1920.
Biographical Notes in German: In Frankreich geborene Regisseurin des französischen und amerikanischen Films, die allgemein als die erste Frau gilt, die im Film Regie führte. Zwischen 1896 und 1902 inszeniert sie mehrere hundert Kurzfilme und über 20 Spielfilme, produzierte über 100 Filme mit synchronisiertem Ton und war die erste Frau, die ihr eigenes Filmstudio besass und leitete.

Alice Guy lebt bis zum Alter von vier Jahren in Carouge bei ihrer Grossmutter auf, 1877-79 weilt sie bei ihren Eltern in Santiago/Chile, kehrt dann in die Klosterschule nach Veyrier/Genf zurück. 1884 kehrt ihr Vater aus Chile zurück, nachdem Erdbeben und Feuer dort seine Existenz zerstörten, zwei Jahre danach kehrt auch die Mutter zurück, kurz darauf stirbt der Vater, und Alice beendet in bescheidenen Verhältnissen ihre Schule in Paris. Als gelernte Stenotypistin wird sie 1894 Sekretärin bei Léon Gaumont, Partner in Felix Richards Kamera-Fabrik "Le Comptoir général de photographie". Im Januar 1895 sieht sie eine Vorführung von Georges Demenÿs "Phonoscope" und seiner 60 mm Filmkamera "Biographe". Nachdem im July 1895 Richard faillierte, übernahm Léon Gaumont Inventar und Firma und erwarb kurz danach das Patent für die Filmkamera. Nachdem Gaumont und Alice Guy eine erste Vorführung von Lumières "Cinématographe" gesehen hatte, bat Guy ihren Chef um Erlaubnis, mit der Gaumont-Kamera einen Film mit einer Spielhandlung zu drehen. Im Frühjar 1896 dreht Alice Guy nach ihren eigenen Worten ihren ersten (Kurz-)Film "La Fée aux choux".
