Shohei Imamura was born circa in 1926 in Tokyo. He is Director, Author, known for 11'09''01 - September 11 (2002), Buta to gunkan (1961), Zegen (1987), Shohei Imamura's first movie on record is from 1957. His last motion picture on file dates from 2002.
Biographical Notes in German: Shohei Imamura, 1926 in Tokio geboren, kam über seine Vorliebe für das Avantgarde-Theater zum Film. Er begann als Regieassistent, u.a. bei Ozu. Später trug er entscheidend zur Reformierung des japanischen Kinos bei.

Analog zu den Entwicklungen in Frankreich rebellierten in den 60er Jahren die jungen japanischen Regisseure gegen das etablierte und hierarchische Studiosystem. Durch die Schaffung einer eigenen Infrastruktur konnte eine große Anzahl neuartiger und bedeutender Filme produziert werden. Imamura etablierte 1965 seine eigene Produktionsfirma, zehn Jahre später gründete er zur Förderung des Nachwuchses in Kawasaki eine Filmhochschule, der er im Jahr 2000 noch immer vorstand.

Der inzwischen 77-jährige Shohei Imamura erhielt für "Die Ballade von Narayama" 1983 in Cannes die Goldene Palme, die ihm 1997 für sein Schuld-und-Sühne-Drama "Der Aal" ein zweites Mal zugesprochen wurde. Sein Schwarz-Weiß-Kunstwerk "Schwarzer Regen" wurde 1989 in Cannes mit dem Technikpreis ausgezeichnet. Zuletzt war im Rahmen des Episodenfilms "11.09.01" (2002) ein Beitrag von Shohei Imamura in deutschen Kinos zu sehen. (arte Presse)
