April 1928 in New York geboren und studierte an der Drama School der Yale University. Ersten Kontakt mit dem Film hatte er als Assistent der Cartoon-Abteilung bei Warner Bros 1949, dann wechselte er zu Metro-Goldwyn.Mayer und ein Jahr später als Produktionsassistent zu Paramount.
1957 machte er seine erste Arbeit als independent Producer für Robert Mulligans "Fear Strikes Out". Mit Mulligan gründete er die Pakula-Mulligan Productions, die unter anderm auch den renomierten Film "To Kill a Mockingbird" produzierte.
Zwölf Jahre später folgte dann das Regiedebüt mit Liza Minnelli in der Hauptrolle beim Film "The Sterile Cockoo", eine seinen ersten grossen Erfolge hatte Pakula mit dem Psychothriller "Klute", für welchen Jane Fonda als Partnerin von John Sutherland mit dem Oscar als beste Schauspielerin ausgezeichnet wurde.
Weitere bemerkenswerte Filme in Pakulas Karriere sind "All the President's Men" über die Watergate-Affaire, "Presumed Innocent" oder "Sophie's Choice".
