Griffith, gründete 1912 die "Keystone Productions", einer der ersten amerikanischen Filmproduzenten, drehte von 1912 bis 1930 mehrere hundert Kurzfilm-Komödien. Gilt als der "Erfinder des Slapstick", der typischen amerikanischen Filmkomödie des Stummfilms, und als "Vater von Charlie Chaplin".
