Amerikanischer Schauspieler und Regisseur, geboren am 29.4.1912 in Albert Lee/Minnesota. Der Sohn eines Rechtsanwalts besuchte zunächst die Universität von Minnesota, wechselte dann jedoch ans Theater. Mit 23 Jahren stand er mit Ethel Barrymore auf der Bühne, wenig später inszenierte er für das Pasadena Community Playhouse eine Aufführung von "Richard III". Nach dem Flop seines ersten eigenen Theaterstücks "Western Waters" (1937) nahm ihm schließlich David Selznick unter Vertrag. Carlsons Debüt in der Betrügerkomödie "The Young in Heart" folgten zahlreiche Rollen in verschiedensten Filmen; als sein Stern langsam zu sinken begann, verlegte er sich auf das SF-Genre und später auf das Fernsehen. Carlson starb am 25.11.1977 an einer Gehirnblutung.
