Biographical Notes
Nils Asther wurde wie Greta Garbo vom Regisseur Mauritz Stiller entdeckt, mit dem er anfangs der 20er Jahre auch eine Affäre hatte. Nils Asther begann seine Stummfilmkarriere 1916 in Schweden und spielte in Filmen wie "Vingarne" (1916), "Das Himmelskibet" (1917) und "Solen der draebte" (1918). Später arbeitete er in den deutschen Produktionen "Der Mann seiner Frau" (1925) und "Das süsse Mädel" (1926). 1926 ging Nils Asther nach Amerika, wo er für die verbleibende Stummfilmära nochmals eine beeindruckende Karriere aufbauen konnte. Er spielte erfolgreich in "Sorrell and Son" (1927), "The Blue Danube" (1928), "Dream of Love" (1928) und schliesslich an der Seite von Greta Garbo in "Wild Orchids" (1929). Wegen seines starken Akzentes wurden seine Rollenangebote im Tonfilm immer seltener, die Rollen selbst immer kleiner. Auch in den 40er Jahren erschien Nils Asther immer wieder auf der Leinwand, so in "Dr. Kildare's Wedding Day" (1941), "Flying Blind" (1941), "Sweater Girl" (1942), "The Night Before the Divorce" (1942), "Bluebeard" (1944), "Jealousy" (1945) und "The Feathered Serpent" (1948). Nach einigen Arbeiten für das Fernsehen in den 50er Jahren kehrte er nach Schweden zurück, wo er in vier weiteren Filmen mitwirkte.
