Remarks and general Information in German: »Mehr noch als Dracula mit Bela Lugosi ist James Whales (1889-1957) Frankenstein ein Klassiker unter den Horrorfilmen, der auch nach mehrern Jahrzehnten kaum etwas von seiner Wirkung verloren hat. Unter den mittlerweile über 30 mehr oder weniger direkten Verfilmungen der Vorlage von Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley gibt es so gut wie keine, die auch nur annähernd die Atmosphäre, die Vielschichtigkeit, die Ironie und kinematographische Perfektion der beiden Filme von Whale erreichten. Frankenstein wurde zum Modell für viele Filme des Genres und war nicht zuletzt das ideale Vehikel für den wohl berühmtesten aller Horordarsteller, Boris Karloff alias Henry Pratt, der eine ganz neue, menschliche Qualität noch in seine schauerlichsten Rollen einbrachte. Karloff stellte Frankenstein zwar nur in insgesamt drei Filmen dar, doch blieb die Rolle für seine weitere Karriere bestimmend, und manche seiner Darstellungen erhalten ihre Wirkung durch den Rekurs auf Elemente des Frankenstein-Mythos. "Mein liebes altes Monster!" bemerkte Karloff am Ende seiner Karriere, "Ich verdanke ihm alles. Er ist mein bester Freund." - James Whale hat insgesamt 21 Filme gedreht, von denen eine Reihe so gut wie nie zu sehen ist. Tom Milne ist in einem Artikel in "Sight and Sound", der auf die Kenntnis von 18 dieser Filme zurückgeht, zu dem Ergebnis gekommen, dass Whales Werk "unerwartete Reichtümer" berge. Und Peter Buchka, der darauf Bezug nahm, hat Whale einen "zärtlichen Exzenztriker" genannt.» (RTL-2 Presse)
