Ein Privatdetektiv gerät in den 30er Jahren in einen riesigen Korruptions-Skandal um die Wasserversorgung des Großraums L.A. und wird mit seinen Nachforschungen unfreiwillig zum Auslöser einer privaten Tragödie. - Roman Polanskis spannender Detektivfilm, der den Zuschauer zunehmend in Bann schlägt, gehört zu den Klassikern des Genres.
Los Angeles 1937: Für Privatdetektiv Jake J. Gittes ist es Routine, als ihn Evelyn Mulwray bittet, ihren Mann zu beschatten: Hollis I. Mulwray, Chefingenieur der Wasserwerke. Tatsächlich gelingt es Gittes, Mulwray mit einer Blondine zu erwischen. Seine Fotos werden am nächsten Tag in der Zeitung veröffentlicht. Da stellt Gittes fest, dass er den Auftrag von einer Betrügerin bekam, denn die echte Evelyn Mulwray sucht ihn wütend im Büro auf. Bald darauf wird Mulwrays Leiche aus einem Trinkwasserkanal geborgen. Niemand stellt weitere Nachforschungen an - außer Gittes, der nicht an einen Unfall glaubt. Denn Mulwray hatte herausgefunden, dass jede Nacht große Mengen des knappen Trinkwassers ins Meer geleitet werden. Gittes verdächtigt Mulwrays Stellvertreter, die Frau geschickt zu haben, um seinen Chef zu kompromittieren. Selbst als ein Ganove dem Detektiv zur Abschreckung die Nase aufschlitzt, beginnt dieser einen groß angelegten Korruptionsfall aufzudecken: Evelyns reicher Vater, Noah Cross, sorgt durch die Ableitung des Wassers dafür, dass die Dürre im Nordwesttal die Farmer verzweifeln lässt und sie deshalb ihr Land für wenig Geld verkaufen. Durch den Bau eines Staudamms und eines Bewässerungskanals plant Cross, das Nordwesttal fruchtbar und beim Wiederverkauf Profit zu machen. Mulwray wurde ermordet, weil er davon wusste. Polizeilieutenant Escobar ist dagegen überzeugt, dass Evelyn ihren Mann aus Eifersucht ermordete und Gittes sie nun erpresst. Als Gittes der Witwe zur Flucht verhilft, überstürzen sich die Ereignisse. Durch einen Anruf wird Gittes zu der Frau gerufen, die sich als Evelyn ausgab. Als er bei ihr ankommt, ist sie bereits ermordet, und die Polizei überrascht Gittes neben der Leiche.... (3Sat Presse)
