Synopsis in German
Catherine de Médicis (Virna Lisi), die Mutter des Königs Charles IX. (Jean-Hugues Anglade) aus dem katholischen Hause Valois, will die Bürgerkriege zwischen Protestanten und Katholiken beenden, die das Königreich zu zerreißen drohen. Sie arrangiert eine pompöse Hochzeit ihrer Tochter Marguerite de Valois, genannt Margot (Isabelle Adjani), mit dem Protestanten Henri (Daniel Auteuil), dem König von Navarre. Die kapriziöse Margot verachtet den linkischen Henri und geht in ihrer Hochzeitsnacht auf die Suche nach einem neuen Liebhaber. Doch ein Attentat auf Admiral de Coligny (Jean-Claude Brialy), den berühmtesten Kriegshelden der Protestanten, führt zu neuen Unruhen. In der Bartholomäusnacht werden Tausende von wahllos aufgegriffenen Protestanten ermordet. Margot rettet den verwundeten protestantischen Edelmann La Mole (Vincent Perez) vor dem entfesselten Mob und verliebt sich in ihn. Sie ist entsetzt über die mörderische Machtgier ihrer Mutter und ihrer Brüder und hilft ihrem Gatten Henri, sich vor deren Intrigen zu schützen. Catherine will Henri durch einen Arsen-Anschlag beseitigen, doch das Opfer wird ihr eigener Sohn, König Charles... (ARD Presse)
