Synopsis in German
"Die schöne Laurence (Marlene Dietrich) ist gerade geschieden worden, da tritt ein schmucker Graf (Harry Liedtke) in ihr Leben. Die leidenschaftliche Affäre findet ein jähes Ende als Laurence erfährt, dass ihr "Jacques" als Kellner arbeitet. Sie verläßt ihn und bereut diesen Schritt erst, als ihr von ihrem Anwalt und Verehrer Talandier (Karl Huszar-Puffy) eröffnet wird, dass der Kellner tatsächlich ein verarmter Adliger ist. Laurence beschließt, ihn zurück zu gewinnen...

"Harry Liedtke küsst Madame die Hand, Harry Liedtke spielt Kellner, Harry ist Großfürst, Harry singt Tonfilm. Um Liedtke hat Robert Land ein Lustspiel arrangiert, in dem als wertvolle neue Erscheinung Marlene Dietrich als Begabung hoffen lässt, wenn sie, möglichst bald, von der Regie aus krampfhaften Garbo-Haltungen entlassen wird". So urteilte das Berliner Tagblatt am 20.01.1929.

Zwei Dinge werden hier deutlich: Der Star des Films war nicht etwa Marlene Dietrich, sondern Harry Liedtke, der Herzensbrecher des deutschen Kinos. Liedtke war zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes angelangt und trug mit seinem Namen wesentlich zum Erfolg des Filmes bei. Der zweite Erfolgsfaktor war die Verwendung des bekannten Gassenhauers "Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame" im Titel und im Film selbst, aber dazu weiter unten mehr.

Obwohl die Dietrich hier als "neue Erscheinung" verkauft wird, hat sie 1929 bereits eine stattliche Anzahl von Filmrollen hinter sich. Meist spielte sie kleinere Rollen, doch wenn sie stärker ins Rampenlicht trat, so war der Vergleich mit der Garbo, dem glamourösesten Star der Zeit, nie fern. Aus diesem Schatten konnte sie sich erst im Jahr darauf lösen, als ihr mit Josef von Sternbergs Der blaue Engel, bezeichnenderweise einem Tonfilm, der internationale Durchbruch gelang."
