"Der Film wurde bei seinem Start mit Missachtung und Schmähung bedacht, doch dieses war unfair und bedarf einer Revision. Es war Clairs erster Film in Hollywood, und Produktionschef und Zensoren standen ihm auf den Füssen. Er konnte nicht das machen, was ihn in Frankreich berühmt gemacht hatte. Es mag sein, dass die Rolle der Dietrich besser von Mae West gespielt worden wäre, aber da gibt es genug an Feinheiten, die einen zweiten Blick verdienen. - Die Kostüme sind prachtvoll (René Hubert), die Produktion ist üppig süffig, und Marlene den Song 'Sweet as the blush of May' singen zu hören, ist allein es wert, den ganzen Film zu sehen."
