Der zunächst aussichtsreiche Versuch, den Gipfel des Mont Blanc über den fast senkrecht, etwa 1000 m hohen Freney-Pfeiler zu erreichen, wurde zu einem der traurigsten Höhepunkte des internationalen Alpinismus. Sieben der besten Bergsteiger Frankreichs und Italiens, die Franzosen Mazeaud, Kohlmann, Vieille und Guillaume und die Italiener Bonatti, Gallieni und Oggione haben sich hier am 8. Juli 1961 auf einen Kampf eingelassen, dessen Ausgang keiner vorausahnen konnte. Trotz beispielhafter Vorbereitung und exzellentem Können endete das Unternehmen in einem mörderischen Rückzug, bei dem vier von ihnen den Tod fanden. Aber gerade die Tragödie des Rückzugs wurde zum Inbegriff von Kameradschaft und Opferbereitschaft für alle Bergsteiger der Welt.
