Der Serbe lernt eine Moslemin kennen und lieben, vergisst darüber seine Frau und seine „patriotischen Pflichten“. Erst als sein Sohn von der Gegenseite gefangen wird und gegen das junge Mädchen ausgetauscht werden soll, versteht er den Ernst der Lage und seine schwierige Situation zwischen den Fronten. Die Liebe erweist sich schließlich stärker als der Krieg. – Der magische Realismus ist Emir Kusturicas Welt. In seiner neuen schwarzen Comédie humaine strotzt es nur so von verrückten Typen wie einem Soldaten, der glaubt, der Krieg könne vermieden werden, einem Bürgermeister, der von der Mafia beseitigt wird, oder einem philosophierenden Schäfer.
