Florenz, um 1500: Der reiche Notar Nicia zählt zu den angesehensten Bürgern der Stadt. Und auch seine junge Frau Lucrezia ist nicht nur von auserwählter Schönheit, sondern überaus fromm. Doch die inzwischen vierjährige Ehe ist bislang kinderlos geblieben, und in der Stadt beginnt man bereits zu tuscheln. Nicia konsultiert eine Reihe von Quacksalbern, doch selbst die merkwürdigsten Kuren bringen keinen Erfolg.
Der junge Fürst Callimaco, seit geraumer Zeit in Lucrezia verliebt, erweist sich als vermeintlicher Retter in der Not. In der Verkleidung eines Arztes macht er dem gutgläubigen Nicia eine ganz besondere Kur schmackhaft - ein Fruchtbarkeitstrunk, gebraut aus der Wurzel der Alraune (in Italien auch bekannt als Mandragora). Das Gebräu hat allerdings eine Nebenwirkung: Da das Gift der magischen Pflanze für den ersten Mann, der mit Lucrezia die Nacht verbringt, tödlich wirkt, muss ein anderer diese notwendige Pflicht erfüllen.
Mithilfe des korrupten Geistlichen Timoteo erwirkt Callimaco die Zustimmung der frommen Lucrezia zu diesem abgekarteten Spiel und verschafft sich in der Verkleidung eines Bettlers Zutritt zu ihrem Schlafzimmer. Die Kur zeigt erstaunliche Wirkung. Am Ende ist Nicia dem falschen Doktor überaus dankbar und überlässt ihm sogar den Schlüssel für künftige Hausbesuche. (BR Presse)
