Reviews in German: "Pro football fans may be disillusioned by this excellent, honest, and often brutal expose of the play-for-pay game. Phillip Elliott (Nick Nolte) is a veteran pass-catcher for the North Dallas Bulls, who bear a strong resemblance to the Dallas Cowboys--not surprising given that the film is based on a novel by former Cowboy wide receiver Pete Gent. The coaches (G.D. Spradlin and Charles Durning) and team owner (Steve Forrest) feel the fiercely independent Elliott has an attitude problem because of his blatant cynicism and his awareness of how he and his teammates are constantly being manipulated by management. Cast aside after being callously used to motivate a fellow player, the receiver comes to realize there is more to life than football, but that he loves the game just the same. Country singer Mac Davis, making his film debut, is quite good as the quarterback who is Elliott's best friend and knows how to play the game both on and off the field and Bo Svenson is effective as a big, dumb defensive lineman. The National Football League refused to help with the production of this film in any way, so the action is kept to a minimum (though what is shown is brutal), but the locker room atmosphere and the off-the-field drama smack of authenticity in NORTH DALLAS FORTY, as telling a depiction of pro football as any to be found. Note the presence of one-time Oakland Raider behemoth John Matuszak, who went on to appear in films such as CAVEMAN and THE GOONIES before his death in 1989." (tvguide.com)
