Reviews in German: «Lebensbild mit Ramon Nevarro (sic!) und Alice Terry - Die Tochter eines auf einer Südseeinsel lebenden Pastors liebt den, sich von seinen Volksgenossen vorteilhaft unterscheidenden, Häuptling eines Negerstammes. Doch als sich ein verkommener Europäer um sie bewirbt und von dem Farbigen in Notwehr getötet wird, verlässt sie mit ihrem Vater das Eiland, während ihr Geliebter Sebstmord begeht. - Die Darstellung ist, von der etwas unglaubhaft gezeichneten Gestalt des Häuptlings abgesehen, sehr gut, von schönen Landschaftsbildern und guter Photographie unterstützt. Paimann gibt die Länge mit 2300 m / 6 Akte resp mit ca. 2000 m / 7 Akte an.

Deutsche Quellen geben zum Teil nicht zutreffende Drehorte an: so behauptet etwa das Reichsfilmblatt, der grösste Teil der Aufnahmen seien auf einer Südseeinsel gedreht worden. In der Besprechung des Film durch den "Kinematograph" wird erwähnt, die Dreharbeiten seien "an der See bei Hollywood" (Kinematograph Nr. 990, 7. Februar 1926, pg 18) von statten gegangen.

«Neben Alice Terry und Ramon Novarro verkörpern in dem neuen Feindt-Film "Unter der Sonne der Südsee" die Hauptrollen: Edward Conelly, Harry T. Morey und John George. Die Regie führte Rex Ingram. Der deutsche Titel "Schwarze Schatten der Zivilisation" wird in einem Wikipedia-Artikel genannt, es ist unklar, aus welcher Quelle er stammt.
Der Film gilt als verschollen.
