Synopsis in German
Nordstaatenoffizier Kirby Yorke befehligt ein texanisches Fort am Rio Grande, das die Siedler vor marodierenden Apachen beschützen soll. Nach ihren Raubzügen ziehen die Indianer sich über den Grenzfluss zurück, den die Kavallerie-Einheit aufgrund eines mit Mexiko ausgehandelten Abkommens nicht überschreiten darf.
Kirby sind die Hände gebunden, doch nicht nur mit den Indianern hat der Lieutenant Colonel seine Schwierigkeiten. Seit er im Bürgerkrieg vor 15 Jahren aus strategischen Gründen die Farm seiner Frau Kathleen niederbrennen musste, hat diese sich von ihm getrennt. Nun tritt Kirbys Sohn Jeff in die Armee ein und wird als Meldereiter der Einheit seines Vaters zugeteilt.
Aus Angst um ihn taucht Kathleen in dem Vorposten auf, um Jeffs Entlassung aus der Armee zu bewirken. Bevor sie ihr Ziel erreichen kann, kommt es zum Überfall durch die Apachen, die alle Soldatenkinder als Geiseln nehmen und sich wie gewohnt über den Grenzfluss zurückziehen. Kirby hat keine andere Wahl, er muss mit seinen Truppen den Rio Grande überschreiten. Bei dieser Mission spielt Jeff eine Schlüsselrolle. (ARD Presse)

Remarks and general Information in German: Mit dieser Geschichte über eine entzweite Familie beendete John Ford seine legendäre Kavallerietrilogie, die er mit "Bis zum letzten Mann" und "Der Teufelshauptmann" begann. In jedem dieser Filme bewältigt John Wayne als pflichtbewusster Offizier einen undankbaren Job. Mit folkloristischen Gesangseinlagen und humoristischen Szenen setzt "Rio Grande" jedoch versöhnliche Akzente. Beeindruckende Bilder vom Monument Valley erzeugen das typische John-Ford-Gefühl. Der beschauliche Western betont weniger die Kampfszenen als die knisternde Auseinandersetzung zwischen Wayne und Maureen O'Hara, die in einem denkwürdigen Dialogsatz die Armee als ihre einzige ernsthafte Konkurrentin bezeichnet.
