Synopsis in German
Nach dem Tod von Allan Stanley sinnt Maud Fergusson auf Rache. In ihrem Auftrag beginnt der Detektiv Hunt zu ermitteln und weist nach, dass Murphy für den Mord verantwortlich ist. Mauds Racheplan sieht vor, eine Zeitungskampagne gegen Murphy zu entfachen, ihn zu diffamieren und bloßzustellen.
Der Plan gelingt besser als erwartet: Murphy verliert sein gesamtes Vermögen und muss schließlich, als Verbrecher geächtet, das Land verlassen. Detektiv Hunt findet jedoch auch heraus, dass es sich bei dem blutjungen Credo Merville, der schon lange in Maud verliebt ist, und den sie wie einen Sohn betrachtet, um Murphys Sohn handelt! Und noch viel mehr weiß Hunt zu berichten: Die Mutter Credos war eine gewisse Maud Gregaards! Nun dämmert es Maud: Credo ist ihr totgeglaubter Sohn, und Murphy ist der Schurke, der sie als junges Mädchen verführte und dann sitzen ließ! Während Credo und Maud sich glücklich in die Arme fallen, geht Murphy, von Maud zurückgewiesen, einsam hinaus in die kalte Winternacht, einer ungewissen, düsteren Zukunft entgegen. (filmportal.de)
