Das Findelkind Manuela wächst in Spanien unter Nonnen auf. Als junge Frau muss sie sich ihren Lebensunterhalt als Tänzerin in einem Nachtlokal verdienen, bis sie eines Tages die Flucht ergreift und im Gasthaus der Familie Llorrente unterkommt. Carlos und Juan, die Söhne des alten Llorrente, sind Schmuggler, die von den Beamten des Gouverneurs erbarmungslos verfolgt werden. Carlos und Manuela verlieben sich ineinander, doch als sie heiraten wollen, verrät der eifersüchtige Juan seinen Bruder an die Behörden. Carlos muss fliehen, während Manuela von dem Gendarmerie-Leutnant Graf Henry d′Amiron umworben wird. Als Carlos überraschend zurückkehrt, um Manuela zu sehen, wird er verhaftet und zum Tode verurteilt. Juan empfindet Reue und kann den Bruder schließlich befreien, indem er sich statt seiner hinrichten lässt. Manuela und Carlos gelingt die Flucht über das Meer. [www.filmportal.de]
