Für sein erstes Filmdrehbuch (nach seinem ersten Theaterstück) umgab sich Richard Oswald mit Mitarbeitern, die den deutschen Stummfilm der folgenden Jahre entscheidend prägen sollten: Regisseur Rudolf Meinert wird für die Decla DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI produzieren, Hermann Warm hier wie dort für die Dekors verantwortlich zeichnen, und Karl Freund wird zum wichtigsten Kameramann des deutschen Films der zwanziger Jahre avancieren. Der Film selber war ein Riesenerfolg, der drei Fortsetzungen nach sich zog. (Filmmuseum München)
