Synopsis in German
Egil und Karin, zwei Waisen, versuchen nach harten Schicksalsschlägen den Ort ihrer Kindheit zu verlassen, um eine bessere Zukunft zu finden. 18 Jahre später ist Egil ein angesehener Arzt und lebt mit seinem Freund Daniel beim alten Kapellmeister Svendsen. Immer wieder muß er an seine Jugend und an Karin denken, die er nie wiedergesehen hat. Da steht sie plötzlich im Krankenhaus vor ihm, verhärmt und schwer krank, einen Säugling im Arm. Er erkennt sie, wendet sich aber, enttäuscht von ihrem Lebenswandel, zunächst von ihr ab. Weitere schwere Schicksalsschläge hatten Karin begleitet, bis ein Maler sie kurz vor dem Hungertod bei sich aufnahm. Nachdem sie ein Kind von ihm bekommen hatte, starb er, ohne für ihre Zukunft sorgen zu können. Nun liegt sie vor Egil, der seine Zweifel schnell überwindet, weil er Karin noch immer liebt.
