Synopsis in German
Die berüchtigte James-Bande überfällt die Bank von Topeka. Doch diesmal verlässt sie das Glück, die Beute ist gleich Null und Bob Ford schwer verletzt. Jesse James kann ihn in letzter Minute vom Tatort wegschaffen und bringt ihn nach St. Joseph, Missouri. Hier kuriert er unter falschem Namen - als Tom Howard - seine Verwundung aus. Als Bob Ford seine Jugendliebe Cynthy trifft, flammt die alte Leidenschaft wieder auf und er will Cynthy unbedingt zu seiner Frau machen. Doch er weiß, dass das Mädchen den Luxus liebt und ein Habenichts für sie nicht infrage kommt. Also beschließt er, sich die 1 000 Dollar zu verdienen, die auf Jesse James' Kopf ausgesetzt sind.
Die Tat gelingt, doch von dem Moment an ist er der meistverachtete Mann des ganzen Westens, nicht nur gehetzt von dem rachsüchtigen Frank James. In Colorado trifft er auf Kelley, einen alten Bekannten von Cynthy. Auch Frank James taucht auf, immer noch auf der Suche nach dem Mörder seines Sohnes. Er lässt Bob alias Tom die Nachricht zukommen, dass Cynthy längst zu Kelley übergelaufen sei. Bob erzwingt eine Schießerei mit dem vermeintlichen Rivalen. Zu Tode getroffen lüftet er sein furchtbares Geheimnis: "Ich habe Jesse James erschossen"... (BR Presse)
