Nach der Schlacht am Little Big Horn, in der Oberst Custer am 2. Juli 1876 mit 260 Soldaten von den Sioux getötet wurde, muss sich ein amerikanischer Major vor einem Kriegsgericht wegen Feigheit vor dem Feind verantworten.
In Captain Benton findet er einen eindrucksvollen Entlastungszeugen. Dieser schildert dem Gericht, wie es dazu kam, dass der ehrgeizige Custer Häuptling Sitting Bull und seinen Kriegern in die Falle ging.... (BR Presse)
Remarks and general Information in German: «Wie so viele vor und nach ihm hat auch Sidney Salkows Film General Custer und die letzte große Auseinandersetzung zwischen amerikanischen Bundestruppen und den Sioux zum Thema - ein uraltes amerikanisches Trauma. Bis heute beschäftigt sich gerade das Western-Genre damit, wie es zu dieser vernichtenden Niederlage kommen konnte. Salkows Oberst Custer ist ein zu Beginn liberaler Mann, den Indianern gegenüber eher aufgeschlossen, bis ihn der Ehrgeiz zu Höherem packt. Seinem Traum, einmal Präsident der USA zu werden, opfert er alles.
Zu den bekanntesten "Custers" der Kinogeschichte gehören Errol Flynn in Raoul Walshs Epos "Sein letztes Kommando" (1941) und Robert Shaw in Robert Siodmaks Leinwandbiografie "Big Horn - Ein Tag zum Kämpfen" (1967). Im November 2009 startet in den USA ein neuer Western um Custer: "The Hard Ride" mit Christopher Atkins.» (BR Presse)
