Für Marie geht ein Wunsch in Erfüllung: Sie heiratet ihren Traummann, den Airline-Piloten Hubert. Der ist allerdings, wenn er nicht in die große weite Welt oder bei der einen oder anderen Stewardess durchstartet, seiner imposanten Mutter Leopoldine sehr verbunden. Leopoldine gönnt Marie aber ihr Prachtexemplar von Sohn keineswegs, daran ändert auch Maries Schwangerschaft nichts. Als Leopoldines Mann stirbt, ziehen Marie und Hubert zu ihr. Ihre Ehe wird auf eine Zerreißprobe gestellt. Mit aller Macht versucht Leopoldine, ihrer Schwiegertochter das Leben zur Hölle zu machen - und entwickelt sich dabei zum regelrechten Schwiegermonster.
