Městečko se připravuje na příjezd paní kněžny, jen mlynář, který vychovává sirotka Haničku, nepřijde kněžnu přivítat, protože s vrchností špatně vychází. Hanička objeví v truhle starou lucernu - symbol ponížení svobodného mlynáře, jehož jedinou povinností k vrchnosti je doprovodit s lucernou kněžnu do lesního zámečku. Pan vrchní ze zámku přikazuje, aby byla Hanička dána na vychování vrchnosti a chce porazit starou lípu, která je podle pověsti ochráncem lidí i zvířat. Kněžně se mlynářova nepoddajnost vcelku líbí. Mlynář jí svítí na cestu při cestě do zámečku a přitom se dozví od staré Kláskové, že Hanička i lípa jsou v nebezpečí. Učitelský Zajíček odmítá vyzradit vrchnosti, kam se Hanička ukryla, přestože mu hrozí odvedení na vojnu. Mlynář chce hájit lípu vlastním tělem. Vtom přichází kněžna, která mlynáře pochopí a zakáže lípu porazit. Před lípou se objeví Hanička, která se do stromu schovala. Kněžna rozbíjí lucernu a zbavuje tím mlynáře povinnosti vůči zámku. Učitelský je jmenován kantorem. Mlynář děkuje paní kněžně a objímá Haničku. (www.filmovyprehled.cz)
