Synopsis in German
Seit dem geheimnisumwitterten Tod des Hollywood-Stars Lylah Clare (Kim Novak) in der Hochzeitsnacht hat ihr Ehemann und Regisseur Lewis Zarkan (Peter Finch) keinen Film mehr gedreht. Er vergräbt sich in seiner Luxusvilla und frönt seinem Zynismus. Eines Tages erklärt ihm sein langjähriger Mitarbeiter Bart Langner (Milton Selzer), er habe eine junge Schauspielerin gefunden, mit der sich ein Film über den toten Star produzieren ließe. Zunächst will Zarkan nichts davon wissen; seine Lethargie ist jedoch wie weggeblasen, als er das Starlet Elsa Brinkman (ebenfalls Kim Novak) zu sehen bekommt. Elsa sieht Lylah Clare tatsächlich täuschend ähnlich.
Zarkan gewinnt den Studio-Boss Barney Sheean (Ernest Borgnine) für sein Projekt und beginnt, den Film über den toten Star zu drehen. Elsa entpuppt sich als eine talentierte Schauspielerin, leidet aber mehr und mehr darunter, dass Zarkan sie bis zur Selbstaufgabe in die Rolle Lylah Clares zwingt. Sie kann es einfach nicht ertragen, für ihn nur Mittel zum Zweck zu sein... (ARD Presse)
